Jin Chanzi is a tall young man. He had a head full of bright golden hair, and revealed a set of sinisterly white teeth when he smiled. His pupils were vertically slit and were also golden like his hair, but did not contain a single shred of emotion, making anyone who saw them shudder inside.

Originally a respected disciple of the Buddha in the Western Paradise, Jin Chanzi committed a small misdeed—sometimes described as showing insufficient reverence or becoming distracted during teachings. As punishment, he was cast down to the mortal world, where he was reincarnated as Tang Sanzang. His mission in this new life was to atone for his mistake by undertaking the perilous journey to the West to retrieve sacred scriptures.
